His lips brushed hers softly, then with more pressure, but she suddenly pulled away and stood, moving toward the door.
“What’s the matter?” he said breathlessly. “Martha? Please, tell me…what’s the matter?”
“I’m—this—we—this can’t happen, Mr. Smith,” she said.
“For so many reasons,” she said. She wanted to rush back to him, to let him take her. She wanted to make memories of them that would sustain her on the many nights of her future when the Doctor had returned and no longer wanted to be with her, not the way John Smith did, but giving in would make the moment when she had to hand that damnable fob watch back to John Smith and tell him to open it that much harder.
“Tell me,” he pleaded.
“You’re a teacher, I’m the maid. It wouldn’t be appropriate.”
“Oh, damn propriety!” John shouted angrily. “Give me one good reason why—”
